I am graduated in Applied Biology by University of Minho (2008) and PhD in Biomedicine by University of Porto (2013), Portugal. During my PhD I developed two training periods focused on glycoproteomics and biochemical analysis at the Center for Biochemistry at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne, Germany, supervised by Dr. Tilo Schwientek. After completed the PhD, I enrolled in a FCT funded project entitle "The role of sialylation in modulating galectin-3 functions in the metastatic process of canine mammary tumors". Then, I developed a post-doc (2014-2018) supervised by Dr. Celso Reis (i3S/University of Porto), on the identification of novel biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and treatment. During my post-doc period I spent a year performing glycoengineered cell lines using CRISPR/Cas9 technology at Copenhagen Center for Glycomics, Denmark, under the supervision of Prof. Henrik Clausen. In November of 2018 I started a research contract as Junior researcher at i3S/University of Porto with a new line of research focused on the development of new strategies for cancer drug discovery based on cancer-associated alterations of glycosylation. During my researcher career I did several international courses and summer schools. I have been participating in several research projects financed both by national institutions, namely FCT and Norte2020, as well as international institutions. I successfully supervised MSc and curricular training students. Recently, I was granted with an FCT project to develop new cancer drugs to tackle cancer metastasis and I am currently leading a small team composed of a master student, a research fellow and a post-doc researcher. I have a diverse publication record with 22 peer-reviewed papers: 3 as first author and 1 as senior corresponding author. Also, I attended many important scientific meetings with oral and poster presentations and I was member of the organizing committee of workshops. I also participate in juries of MSc and PhD academic degrees and I act as reviewer for some journals. Since 2015, I have been invited to give lecture to post-graduate courses of University of Porto (Master in Medicine Oncology and GABBA PhD program). Currently, my main research interests are to unravel the molecular events during carcinogenesis and the process of metastasis due to alteration of cellular glycosylation and the development of new cancer drugs. |
