Short CV
BSc in Biology (1993), MSc in Oncobiology (1996), and PhD in Human Biology (2000). She is a Principal Investigator at Ipatimup and a Professor at the Department of Pathology and Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. Ceu Figueiredo has contributed to the molecular and epidemiological characterization of Helicobacter pylori virulence factors and to the discovery of their clinical relevance in peptic ulcer disease and gastric carcinoma.
She has published over 65 peer-reviewed journal articles and five book chapters, and has one patent. Her research work has been cited by more than 2900 papers (h-index 23). She has coordinated and participated in projects, including national projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Agency for Innovation, and the Ministry of Health, and in international projects funded by the European Commission (Sixth Framework Programme) and ERA-NET Pathogenomics.

Our research team aims at elucidating how Helicobacter pylori virulence factors and specific host-pathogen interactions may explain gastric carcinogenesis. We are examining variation in cagA, vacA, and dupA virulence factors of H. pylori aiming at clarifying their functional and clinical relevance. In this context, we also aim at developing bacterial genotyping tools that allow the identification of patients at high risk of disease development/progression and to whom more intensive clinical surveillance can be offered. We are also exploring how H. pylori interacts at the gastric epithelial surface with cell-cell junctions and with tyrosine kinase receptors, and activates signaling pathways that are important for gastric disease development. Another area of work explores the impact of H. pylori infection on DNA repair systems and on the genetic instability at nuclear and mitochondrial DNA levels and their contribution to gastric carcinogenesis in infected individuals.
