Short CV

Joana Pereira Marques is currently a Junior Researcher at Microbes & Cancer Group at Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) withing the scope of a FCT funded project (MALIGN). Her scientific interests are related to gastric microbiome, cancer biology, and molecular biology. In September 2019, she obtained her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology Applied to Health Sciences at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto. Joana graduated in Biology (branch Molecular Biology and Genetics; 2010) and did a Master’s Degree in Applied Microbiology (2013) at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. In 2015, she was awarded a doctoral grant from the FCT within the scope of BiotechHealth Doctoral Programme (ICBAS-UP). Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Céu Figueiredo, Joana focused on the implementation of molecular approaches based on next-generation sequencing to characterize the gastric microbiome, specifically in the context of gastric carcinogenesis. During her PhD, she joined the international molecular diagnostics company, DDL Diagnostic Laboratory (The Netherlands), where she performed whole metagenome sequencing experiments and bioinformatics data analysis to study the gastric microbiome, under the supervision of Dr. Wilco Knetsch and Dr. Leen-Jan van Doorn. As a result of her scientific activities, Joana authored 8 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (5 as first author), including a book chapter in the area of the gastric microbiome and gastric cancer. Importantly, she contributed to a major article of the group published in a leading journal in the field of Gastroenterology (Gut; IF: 17.9; top 5% journal). This publication was considered a Highly Cited Paper, obtaining citations to put it in the top 1% of the area of Clinical Medicine (Essential Science Indicators). This work was distinguished with the Pfizer Award 2018 in Clinical Research. She presented her work as oral and poster communications at several national/international meetings. Additionally, she has experience in mentoring by participating in the laboratory practical classes of pre- and post-graduate curricular units (Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto) and by being tutor of several participants in the i3S Animal Science Course (Category B). Recently, she co-supervised a BSc degree student and she has been mentoring laboratory activities of other students. She participated as team member in 3 research projects funded by national (FCT) and international agencies (European Commission - Horizon 2020 and Worldwide Cancer Research). Alongside her research work, Joana has been pursuing training both in scientific and transferable skills by enrolling in several courses and workshops. She attended the Course in Laboratory Animal Science, Category C with FELASA accreditation. Moreover, she has been involved in science dissemination and outreach initiatives.
