André Vieira (Vieira AF) has a Biochemistry degree by the University of Porto, Portugal, having completed his Doctoral degree in 2012 on the topic of cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the tumour microenvironment (University of Porto, Portugal, in collaboration with the University of Manchester, UK). His area of scientific specialization is the Biology and Genetics of breast cancer, with a particular focus in the role of adhesion molecules in CSCs, the cell-of-origin of breast tumours and the CSC niche, having authored and co-authored several original works and review articles in international peer-reviewed journals. The role of the adhesion molecule P-cadherin in normal physiology is poorly understood and his current research interests are now focusing on P-cadherin as a regulator of normal epithelial cell polarity and stem cell division. His main technical skills include stem cell biology assays, such as the ALDEFLUOR-assay, analysis of cell surface markers by flow cytometry, cell separation by sorting techniques (Automacs, BD INFLUX, FACS ARIA-II) and clonogenic assays, including growth of animal cells in mammosphere and 3D culture conditions. Also, a significant experience was developed in X-ray irradiation techniques, animal manipulation, cell culture (bacterial and animal), western-blot, imunohistochemistry, fluorescence immunocytochemistry, ELISA, PCR and general lab techniques. Currently working as a postdoctoral research fellow at Ipatimup on the topic of adhesion molecules and polarity in normal mammary gland and in cancer. |
