Short CV

Julian Ugonotti holds a PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Sciences (2023) from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, funded by the Australian Government Research Training Program.

His doctoral research in the Analytical Glycoimmunology Group uncovered new biosynthetic pathways and regulatory mechanisms of paucimannosidic N-glycans in human neutrophils. By integrating advanced glycomics and glycoproteomics, Julian revealed how these unique glycans modulate immune enzyme activity and contribute to inflammation, providing a new framework for understanding neutrophil glycosylation in health and disease.

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Macquarie University, he expanded his research by developing novel approaches to identify and characterise paucimannosidic binding proteins or receptors and the functional consequences of these interactions.

Julian has contributed to international collaborations and publications in PNAS, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Glycobiology, and Oncotarget. Further, he has presented his work internationally, received multiple research awards, and mentored postgraduate students in glycobiology and glyco(proteo)mics.

He is currently a researcher in the Glycobiology in Cancer group at i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, University of Porto, Portugal, working within the GlycOSELECT project funded by the FCT. His research focuses on implementing glycoanalytical technologies to characterise O-glycan-selective metallopeptidases from mucin-degrading bacteria to advance molecular O-glycoproteomic and O-glycomic studies in cancer.
