Short CV
Joana Figueiredo graduated in Biologia Aplicada in October 2005 at University of Minho, with the classification of 15, ECTS Grading Scale B. From February 2005 to December 2005, she did a training programme and became team member of the project entitled: “Validation of the role of XIAP in quimiotherapy resistance in acute myelogenous leukemia: different approach for a new treatment”, developed at the Cancer Biology Group, supervised by Professor Maria Helena Vasconcelos Meehan in Ipatimup.
In January 2006, she got a research fellowship (BI) from the project entitled: ""Biological Role of BRAF Oncogene Activation in Human Carcinogenesis"", funded by Novartis and developed in Ipatimup, under the supervision of Professor Raquel Seruca.
From November 2007 to January 2009, she was recipient of a research fellowship (BI) from the project entitled: ""Exploring the role of E-cadherin trafficking deregulation in epithelial cancer progression"", funded by FCT (PTDC/SAUOBD/64319/2006) and developed in the Cancer Genetics group - Ipatimup, supervised by Professor Raquel Seruca and Doctor Gianpaolo Suriano. Within the same group, she participated in another project entitled: ""MLK3, a new mutated gene in MSI colorectal cancer"", funded by FCT (PTDC/SAU-OBD/68310/2006).
From the beginning of February 2009 until the end of December 2012, Joana Figueiredo developed her PhD studies which resulted in a thesis entitled: ""The role of E-cadherin trafficking regulation in epithelial cancer progression"". The PhD degree was conferred by Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and supported by the FCT grant SFRH/BD/43763/2008, under the supervision of Professor Raquel Seruca.
Currently, she is member of the team that is developing the project: ""The Role of Protein Quality Control in the regulation of E-cadherin and its relevance in cancer"" funded by FCT (PTDC/SAUOBD/104017/2008), and holds a post-doctoral fellowship at Ipatimup.
Joana Figueiredo is co-author of 16 papers published

The main research domain of Joana Figueiredo is cell biology with particular emphasis on E-cadherin post-translational regulation, trafficking and signalling.
She is also interested in the study of cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions dependent on E-cadherin.
Currently, she uses as a model the Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer, as this cancer syndrome is a highly invasive disease and is caused by E-cadherin germline defects, that result in E-cadherin loss of function.
